Speak Like a Pirate
Local man Jake Hobbs has found himself in an increasingly difficult predicament: he can only speak like a pirate, and society refuses to adjust accordingly.
The 37-year-old Kansas City resident, who developed the condition after an ill-advised deep dive into Talk Like a Pirate Day, now finds everyday interactions riddled with confusion, frustration, and the occasional public disturbance complaint.
“I be cursed, matey,” Hobbs lamented. “Tried talkin’ normal, but every time I open me gob, out comes the tongue o’ the high seas. Arr, ‘tis a cruel fate!”
The Challenges of Pirate-Speak in a Landlocked World
While Hobbs insists he’s still a “functionin’ member of society,” his peculiar way of speaking has led to some challenges—especially in professional settings.
“I had to let him go,” said former employer Steve Hathaway. “He kept referring to our quarterly budget meeting as ‘parley with the scallywags.’ It was disruptive.”
Hobb's last attempt at a job interview went equally poorly.
When asked about his leadership skills, he responded, “I be steerin’ me crew through stormy seas with a firm hand and a cutlass o’ wisdom!” The hiring manager, unfamiliar with maritime metaphors, politely ended the interview after five minutes.
Even basic errands have become an ordeal.
Grocery shopping takes twice as long due to his insistence on calling bread “hardtack” and referring to the self-checkout as “the lootin’ station.” When asked for his email at a coffee shop, Hobbs replied, “Send yer carrier pigeon to Blackbeard@thebrinydeep.com, ye landlubbin’ swabs!” The barista gave him tea instead of coffee, unsure if she had just been cursed.
Romantic Woes on the High Seas of Dating
Perhaps the biggest challenge Hobb's faces is in his love life. Dating apps have not been kind to him, with most matches unmatching after the first message: “Ahoy, fair maiden! Be ye ready to sail the turbulent waters of courtship?”
When he does manage to land a date, things tend to go south quickly.
His last dinner ended abruptly when he loudly accused the waiter of “tryin’ to hornswaggle me doubloons” over an 18% gratuity. His date, citing “emotional seasickness,” never texted back.
Hope on the Horizon?
Despite his struggles, Jake remains optimistic. “One day, I’ll find me a wen—er, lady—who understands me ways. Or maybe I’ll find a job where me talents be appreciated.”
Until then, he remains a man out of time, bravely navigating a world that, for some reason, refuses to adopt pirate vernacular.
“Arr,” he sighed. “It be a lonely life, but a pirate’s life be the only life I know.”
