PORTLAND, OR — What began as a casual hobby quickly spiraled into a full-blown identity crisis this week, as local man and self-proclaimed “bike mystic” Darren Holtz completed his 14th consecutive month of living entirely off Clif bars, podcast wisdom, and unsolicited advice about tire pressure.

“I don’t ride my bike,” said Holtz, tightening his fingerless gloves with the conviction of a man who once read half of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. “I become the bike.”

Friends say Darren, 33, started cycling to work during the pandemic but now insists his body is a temple “only accessible via a single-speed fixie and 12% incline.”

He’s also developed a suspicious intolerance to cars, public transportation, and casual conversations that don’t involve the phrase “cadence efficiency.”

“He tried to stage an intervention for me last week,” said roommate Kai Lam. “Not for drugs or anything—just because I still wear cotton T-shirts. He said my clothes ‘trap sweat karma.’”

Sources confirmed Holtz recently sold all his belongings to fund what he calls The Great Gearshift—a solo pilgrimage to “find himself” by biking across 13 states with nothing but a GPS, a GoPro, and 42 gallons of coconut water.

“He won’t stop talking about his ‘quads of mindfulness,’” said ex-girlfriend Natalie Reeves. “He left me because I wouldn't commit to an all-vegan, saddle-bag-only lifestyle. He said I was ‘spiritually out of alignment with his derailleur.’ I think that’s a metaphor. I hope.”

Holtz documents his journey daily on his vlog, The Spoke Truth, where he shares insights like “sweat is the soul’s lubricant” and “true happiness lies somewhere between a good climb and a beet smoothie.”

Despite the fact that he hasn't held a job in over two years, Darren insists he’s thriving. “Capitalism can’t follow you up a mountain pass,” he said, while repairing a tire with a yoga mat and what appeared to be hummus. “I measure success in RPMs, not dollars.”

When reached for comment, Holtz’s parents said they’re proud of him “in an abstract way” and have started forwarding him Indeed job listings under the subject line “Pedal Toward Stability.”

At press time, Holtz the man on a bicycle tour was last seen in the desert attempting to barter a chakra alignment session in exchange for brake pads and cold brew. Witnesses report he appeared “very dehydrated but deeply centered.”
